Transaction Details:

  • PIPE led by Foxconn with participation from existing and new institutional investors
  • 100% of existing shareholders rolling equity (180-day lockup)

My Take: This validates my June 24 prediction that “at least 3 humanoid robot IPOs in 2026.” Unitree (IPO) + Agility (SPAC) = 2 down, Figure looks next. The $2.5B valuation is reasonable given the commercial traction — Agility has actual customers paying for actual robots in actual factories. The $300M order book is the key number to watch for conversion.

Update Jul 14: Agility and Churchill filed confidential S-4 registration statement, moving toward close.

Update Jul 16/17: Agility opens 60,000 sq ft Fremont facility — new AI development hub in Silicon Valley. Nearly 200 new hires (AI/ML, software, field ops). Complements RoboFab (Salem, OR) which targets 10K units/year capacity.


2. Japan Launches World’s First National AI Infrastructure (Jul 15-16)

THIS IS A PARADIGM-SHIFTING WEEK FOR JAPAN’S AI ROBOTICS POSITION.

In a coordinated three-part announcement, NVIDIA and Japan’s government-industrial complex unveiled the most comprehensive national AI robotics strategy ever seen.

2a. National AI Infrastructure with Noetra + METI (Jul 16)

NVIDIA partnering with Noetra Corp. to build a Vera Rubin AI factory:

  • 13,750 NVIDIA Vera CPUs + 27,500 NVIDIA Rubin GPUs
  • 140 megawatts of data center capacity
  • Built on NVIDIA DSX platform with Spectrum-X Ethernet networking

Cosmos 3 Edge — New 4-billion-parameter world model for on-device vision reasoning on NVIDIA Jetson. Lightweight enough for edge deployment. Adaptable in ~1 day for specific robots/vehicles/sensors.

My Take: Japan is executing a coordinated national strategy that mirrors China’s approach but with NVIDIA at the center. The combination of METI funding, FANUC/Yaskawa/Kawasaki manufacturing expertise, and NVIDIA’s full platform stack is potent. Japan may leapfrog from “behind in AI” to “leader in physical AI” within 3-5 years.


3. NVIDIA Halos for Robotics — Safety Infrastructure for Physical AI (Jun 22)

Industry’s first full-stack safety system for robotics and physical AI, extending NVIDIA’s autonomous vehicle safety foundation (18,600+ engineering years).

Architecture:

  • NVIDIA IGX Thor — industrial-grade AI compute with built-in safety
  • Halos OS — safety software stack including Halos Core + Outside-In Safety Blueprint (open source on GitHub)
  • Halos AI Systems Inspection Lab — world’s first ANAB-accredited program for functional/AI safety for physical AI

Ecosystem: 40+ companies across manufacturers, certification bodies, safety vendors.

My Take: Safety certification is the hidden gating factor for humanoid deployment at scale. Halos is NVIDIA providing the same platform strategy for robot safety that GR00T provides for robot AI. This standardizes the safety stack the way GR00T standardizes the AI stack, making it easier for every humanoid company to get certified. Agility being launch partner is strategic — first-mover advantage in certified safety.


4. South Korea’s $1T Physical AI / Humanoid Plan (Jul 1)

South Korea designated physical AI as a national strategic industry, wrapped into a $1 trillion package across semiconductors, AI data centers, and physical AI.

Key Humanoid Component:

  • Hyundai committing $5.8 billion for a robot manufacturing facility + AI data center in Saemangeum
  • Target: 30,000 Atlas humanoid robots per year by 2028
  • Boston Dynamics Atlas platform as the centerpiece (Hyundai acquired BD in 2021)
  • Government target: commercialize humanoids in 10 major industries by 2028
  • 10,000 AI robotics specialists to be trained over 5 years

Wildcard — Labor Union Pushback:

  • Hyundai Motor’s labor union overwhelmingly approved a potential strike (Jun 25)
  • Dispute over profit sharing and job protections tied to Atlas deployment
  • State mediation committee granted legal right to strike

My Take: This is the first explicit labor confrontation over humanoid deployment in a major economy. South Korea’s plan is ambitious ($1T, 30K units, 10 industries), but the union dynamic is a preview of the political friction every country will face. The government calling it “physical AI” rather than “robots replacing workers” is telling — but the union isn’t fooled.


5. NVIDIA Isaac GR00T Reference Humanoid Robot (Late 2026 availability)

Announced May 31 at GTC Taipei, detailed here as full specs now available.

The Reference Design:

My Take: This is the Android of humanoids — an open reference platform that any lab or company can build on. By combining Unitree’s cost-effective hardware with NVIDIA’s AI stack and Sharpa’s dexterous hands, NVIDIA lowers the barrier to entry for humanoid research dramatically. The Unitree G1 support extends this to the sub-$10K research robot market.


6. Figure AI — Production Milestone Achieved (Apr 29, detailed now)

Figure’s BotQ facility has achieved:

  • 24x throughput improvement (1 robot/day → 1 robot/hour) in under 120 days
  • 350+ Figure 03 units produced
  • 80% first-pass yield (end of line), 99.3% battery line yield
  • 9,000+ actuators across 10+ SKUs produced
  • 50+ in-process inspection points, 80+ functional verification tests per robot

Technical Breakthrough: Perception-conditioned whole-body control (Helix S0)

  • RGB head cameras → stereo 3D → whole-body control policy
  • Trained with RL in simulation across thousands of randomized terrains
  • Zero-shot sim-to-real transfer — no real-world fine-tuning needed
  • Stair traversal as first demonstration; underlying capability is general

Fleet Operations:

  • Custom Fleet Management System, Over-the-Air (OTA) updates
  • Field Service Management system for diverse environments (HQ to customer sites to homes)
  • Focus on “long tail” edge-case failures that only emerge at fleet scale

My Take: Figure is quietly building the most impressive production story in humanoid robotics. 1 robot/hour is production-scale manufacturing, not lab-scale. The perception-conditioned whole-body control is a legit technical achievement — real stairs, zero sim-to-real gap, no operator intervention. The data flywheel from 350+ deployed units compounds their advantage.


7. UBTech U1 Companion Humanoids (Jul 3)

UBTech launched the U1 series — ultra-realistic humanoid companions for the consumer market.

Pricing:

  • Robotic torsos from 119,800 yuan (~$17,650)
  • Full-size humanoids up to 990,000 yuan (~$145,835)

Claims:

  • 13,361 orders received, deliveries targeted within 2026
  • Emotional LLM claims >90% accuracy identifying 20+ human emotions
  • Visible pores, blood vessels, fingerprints on full-size models
  • Male and female versions

Market Claim: CBO Tan Min: “China’s ultra-realistic humanoid robot industry will grow from tens of billions to trillions of yuan between 2026 and 2036.”

Context: UBTech reported 821M yuan ($113M) revenue from full-size embodied intelligence robots in 2025 — 22x YoY growth. 1,079 units delivered in 2025.

My Take: 13,361 orders is a commercial signal worth watching, but these are pre-orders with unknown conversion rates. The $145K price tag puts this in luxury goods territory, not mass market. However, UBTech’s 22x revenue growth and 1,079 delivered units in 2025 are concrete numbers that suggest real (if early) market demand for humanoid companions. This is a very different market from industrial humanoids — and potentially much larger if the price can drop.


8. China Humanoid Developments (Jun-Jul 2026)

BYD Confirms Humanoid Development:

  • EVP Stella Li confirmed BYD is developing humanoid robots
  • Using its own operations as first deployment environment
  • Embodied intelligence team recruiting since late 2024

XPENG Robotics:

  • Mass production target: end of 2026
  • First deployment: retail stores as shopping guides in Q1 2027
  • Full-chain manufacturing base under construction in Guangzhou

Roland Berger’s humanoid robot market projections:

  • $300B robot manufacturer revenue by 2035 (baseline)
  • $750B by 2035 (optimistic)
  • $4T long-term potential (comparable to automotive industry)
  • Assumes ~$2/hour running cost for humanoids at scale

Caveat: The report acknowledges software maturity, safety, liability, and regulation as gating factors. Early value expected in narrow, repetitive applications (unpacking, transporting). Wider deployment depends on solving hard problems.

My Take: Roland Berger joins Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley in the “trillion-dollar market” camp. The consensus is converging: $300B-$750B by 2035 is becoming the reference range.


10. BMW Tests Humanoids at Leipzig Plant

BMW began testing AI-powered humanoid robots at its Leipzig plant in July 2026. This follows BMW’s earlier pilot with Figure AI at Spartanburg. Now testing multiple platforms.


11. Europe Unveils Record 35 New NVIDIA AI Supercomputers (Jun 22)

At ISC 2026, Europe announced 35 new NVIDIA AI supercomputers across the continent, signaling massive compute infrastructure buildout for AI workloads including potentially robotics training.


Core Thesis: “National Industrial Strategy” Phase

June (Industrial-Scale Deployment): The thesis was that humanoids crossed from commercial viability to industrial-scale deployment.

July (National Industrial Strategy): The thesis upgrades again. Three major economies (Japan, South Korea, US-via-Agility SPAC) have now launched coordinated national strategies for humanoid/Physical AI within a 22-day window.

This is no longer just a technology or market story — it’s a geopolitical industrial strategy story.
